The Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway opened in 1891 as North America's highest train line, climbing almost 8,000 feet in less than nine miles of track out of Manitou Springs, Colorado. Inclined locomotives like this one were custom-built in Philadelphia to handle the 16% grade, and they operated on the mountain for nearly 50 years.
